WHO THEY ARE
Unscripted Learning hosts unique educational programs for autistic teenagers and young adults. Using the theory of improv comedy, participants develop skills in teamwork, creative problem-solving, and leadership. Providing weekly workshops, autistic individuals are guided through exercises for exploring emotional expression, listening techniques, interpersonal relationships, and other social abilities, using comedy and laughter as a medium.
With the support of NEXT for AUTISM’s grant funding, Unscripted Learning’s Connections Program was able to expand its team, making it possible to offer three weekly classes totaling 28 participants, both in-person and virtually. The added staff enabled greater engagement in each session, resulting in 90% of participants enhancing their interpersonal skills. Connections maintains an incredible 85% retention rate, and many of the older students have been involved in the program since it started in 2017. Armed with their newly developed comedy talents, the students hosted a live performance, sharing their humor and achievements with over 100 family members, friends, and community members. Unscripted Learning continues to grow, and in Fall of 2024, they brought their program to two school districts in San Diego. By training educators and Speech Language Pathologists in their methodology, programs are now reaching exponentially more students, directly in their schools.
