Autism Works: Solmaris’ Story

Solmaris is an autistic adult who graduated from Urban Autism Solutions' Transition Academy. She found a job she loves and excels at in retail.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy working and looking at the new items I stock because I’m in charge of stocking. I have two jobs – I also do the sales floor. I pick up the floor and make things look nice. I just did an overnight and picked up the sales floor all by myself and made it look nice.

What was your biggest challenge in finding/getting this job?

There were so many candidates already – Ross is about competitive work. So, if you don’t look like the person they need, or you don’t have the qualifications they need, they might not accept you. I didn’t think I’d have enough qualifications.

What advice do you have for other autistic job seekers?

When possible, if it’s doable, find the right community to help you with it. The right community. The right friends. The people to stand by what you’re looking for and looking to do.
