NYCA is thrilled to partner with SundanceTV to promote this groundbreaking television series about a family’s struggle with autism. At the series premiere in New York, David Remnick, NYCA board member and editor of The New Yorker, moderated a lively panel that featured Peter Bowker, the series writer, Ilene Lainer, NYCA’s president, and Eli Gottlieb, author of Best Boy. NYCA supports The A Word, because we believe that art can shine a light on the autism experience, Ilene Lainer explained. In The A Word, we recognize the potential for educating audiences about autism spectrum disorder, and about the struggle and hope of families who live with autism. Additionally, we partnered with SundanceTV on this PSA, which emphasizes our message of community and urges viewers to reach out to families living with autism: Someone You Know Loves Someone with Autism.
The A Word is a family drama that treats autism with an unusual honesty and humanity that can be attributed in part to the fourteen years that Peter Bowker spent teaching people with developmental disabilities. Mr. Bowker relied on the experiences of families whose children he taught and watched grow up over twenty-five years. The series “got it right,” remarked David Remnick. “The moment in the doctor’s office , was for me like a home movie.” We hope you’ll tune in and share your thoughts with us as well.
